My Baby Book Stinks!

Victim of Stinky Baby Book

Victim of Stinky Baby Book

Ok, well… that’s not quite true. My baby book definitely does not stink, because I had a rather nice selection to choose from. But, it just may be that your baby book wasn’t exactly what you were hoping for. Perhaps you bought it only to find out that the memory book pages didn’t collect the information you wanted. Maybe it’s too hard to fill out… or doesn’t have enough space for the things you really want to add. Maybe you received it as a gift and felt obligated to use it, even though you secretly despise the album and want to re-do it. Or, maybe it was poorly constructed causing the binding to come unglued and the pages are falling out. Or, it could be that your two-year-old spilled juice all over it and the pages are now water-warped.

Whatever the disaster may be, it could just be that your baby book simply stinks, and you want a new one, but you have a hard time justifying buying another because you have a perfectly…err… well, not so perfectly good one right now.

We want to hear your story. At BabySakes.com, we understand the importance of a good baby book – it’s the one baby item that your little one is still sure to treasure when they are all grown up. A family heirloom that will be passed down from generation to generation. Just think… one day, your words could be read by your great-great-great grandchildren as part of your family history. After all, it’s a keepsake that’s not to be taken lightly!

That’s why BabySakes.com provides a huge selection of the best baby books we can find with dozens of boutique brands and carefully crafted albums.

Now, back to your lousy book. In the comments below, please let us know why your baby book stinks and deserves to be replaced with a new one. You don’t have to say the brand of the book, or where you bought it…. just why you don’t like it. We will select an entry on September 12th to receive a $75.00 gift certificate towards the baby book of your choice – hooray! (complete rules here) The only catch is that you must report back to let us know which baby book you choose and how you like it when you receive it.

And, with your comments, we might all learn a thing or two about what makes a better baby book.

Which is the best baby book?
To make it even easier to select the perfect baby book, BabySakes.com is now collecting and posting customer reviews of the baby albums they have purchased. These now appear on the product page for each baby album for which reviews have been received. We do not filter these… if the review is negative, we want to know and we want you to know so that you can make the best decision when choosing an album. We even pass this info back to manufacturers to help them with their future products. Thanks to other Moms and Dads, you might just pick up a few tips on which baby memory book will be best for your family!

September 15, 2008 Update – And the Winners Are…

We appreciate all of the stories of your baby book disasters and can’t stand the thought of you all having to be stuck with them.  It’s just too heartbreaking! So, everybody else who submitted to this contest will receive a $30 gift certificate “bonus prize” for taking the time to share (as long as you meet eligibility requirements). We would love to have everybody report back on the baby album that you choose to see if you are able find the perfect baby book for you!

  1. My baby book stinks because it is completely inappropriate for our family. My sister-in-law bought it for us for our baby shower, and I just can’t believe it. The problem: the book talks about “Daddy” at least a dozen or more times, and our son has two moms. Rather than just finding a book that was gender neutral (or even simply skipping the idea entirely), said sister-in-law found a box focused on Daddy and then began to write in the book, crossing out “Daddy” and writing in “Mommy”. I just can’t bring myself to keep it up. I definitely don’t want my child to think his family is so strange that we couldn’t even find an appropriate baby book.

  2. Hmmm… that is a tough one! I guess you couldn’t exactly return it with “Daddy” crossed out of all the pages either! If your sister-in-law was shopping in the stores, it was probably impossible for her to find a parental gender neutral album. We give her points for perseverance and um… creativity!

  3. Not only is it geared towards the stereotypical family (which we don’t have) it makes biased assumptions about breastfeeding. AND the binding fell apart so it’s in pieces.

    Help!

  4. We too are victims of the Stinky Baby Book Syndrome. Ours has a picture of a teddy bear holding balloons and a sweet pastel blue sign that says, “It’s a Boy!”. Very cute, yes. The problem is that our baby was definitely not a boy! I tried embellishing the outside with pinks and lavenders to make it look more gender neutral. I also tried to cover up the little blue sign. Rather clever, I thought to myself. However these efforts were all in vain – instead I have a baby book clearly meant for a boy that looks like a pink diaper cake exploded all over it.

My inner scrapbooking diva cries every time I look at the disaster baby book…

    Must…find…replacement…

  5. Where to start…
Well, my baby book was bought for me while I was in the hospital after I gave birth, since I was never given a baby shower. Therefore, I really had no say in what I wanted in the book that would be holding the memories of my pregnancy. I ended up with a nuetral book, and I know I should be greatful, but I really wanted people to embrace my daughter as a girl.
Then there is the fact that it is a book meant for two parents. Her father doesn’t deserve a place in her baby book. He left me while I was pregnant at 16 years old for another woman with 3 kids. My daughter is such a better person than he is, and I really don’t want her to be haunted with the thought that her father doesn’t care about her, so I would really love a single-mom book.
The icing on the cake is that when her father came back here one night, he ripped many pages out of the book in a drunken rampage. My memories will always be in my heart, but a baby book is the only thing I can give to her when she gets older to prove that she has always been my favorite person, through everything.

P.S. I think I filled the last comment out wrong, so I just posted another one!
    Thanks.

  7. I was given a baby book from my Dad’s new wife, that has no taste or even knows my taste. I even like plain things, an all pink book would have worked. Instead I got an over the top pink, fuffy, lace, teddy bears, gingam little girl baby book. I had the smarts to sell it and buy a new plain pink one.

  8. I cut corners on my second daughter’s baby book, which I vowed I wouldn’t do after I skimped on my first daughter’s book. But, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay the going rate for the ones I REALLY wanted – the custom designed, “upholstery”-looking, monogrammed ones. So I settled. The ones I have now are so cutesy, cardboard-y, generic, with “fill-in-the blank” pages. They feel very “manufactured” and impersonal even after I put in my daughters’ information. I guess I just want their books to be SO special since they are so meaningful: they’re supposed to summarize the first years of these precious miracles of life, and I feel that they don’t help capture them – who they are, what they represent to us. It just feels like we’re filling out questionnaires, and we’re restricted in providing the “answers” into about 20 words or less so that they fit into the allotted spaces. If I could do it over again, I would select books for my daughters that are more personal somehow, of higher quality, classic, timeless and unique…

  9. My baby book stinks because I never had one. I have two older brothers and then my twin brother so my moms hands were full when it came to being able to do any crafty things. Now that I’m going to be having my first baby my husband and I really want to have a baby book to put all of our memories in since he’s a Marine and deploys all the time so our memories will need to be in a book especially since we will never know whats gonna happen.
I have seen other peoples who have baby books and it makes my husband and I a bit jealous. When he was growing up, his house burned down when he was about 5 so his family doesn’t really have any baby pictures of him. So it would really be a treat for us to get one for our child and for it to just be perfect. My older brothers baby books look good, i just wish I had one. But I wont make my parents mistake of not making one for my child. No matter what it takes.

  10. Well I have a horror story for you!! My hubby and I have been together for 6 years now and I have a beautiful stepdaughter that is 8 years old and my husband and her mother split up when she was 1 1/2 yaers old. Well my husband is a WONDERFUL dad and he spend so much time with her holding her all though the night and waking up and feeding her all night long and doing all the great things that mom’s do and dad’s a suppose to do, while her mother did nothing and decided that she was to young for a daughter and went out every night all night. So as my husband spend all this time taking care of his beautiful little girl he wrote every single thing down that she did from the second she was born to her first word which was fan LOL because she loved to stare at the fan and her dad would say “FAN” over and over. Her first smile, how gasses she was to how she loved to run in the corner to go poop LOL. So anyways great memories that of course he can remember and I can since I was told eveything, but it would be a great thing to pass on to her when she gets old enough but Unforturely her mother (which is a awful person and we won’t even go there) took the book when she moved out and was driving with out a license and got pulled over and had all kinds of things in her trunk, whick inclued her baby book and all of her baby pictures and all the really important stuff even her social security card (Who knows why she would have all theat important stuff in her car but whatever) so the police impounded her car and she let it sit in there for a while and never told us and she let it sit there until they finally tookeverything out of it and probably thre it away and sold her car at an auction. Yeah so that’s my story our poor little girl has no more baby memories to carry on and show her kids because her mom lost it. That’s why I really think that this would be a great gift for us. :)

  11. I don’t have any horror stories or a book that I dislike to tell you about…my personal baby book is beautiful although a little bare (in comparison to my older sibiling) due to my mother barely finding time for herself while juggling two small children but I want to do it right the first time so when my little one asks one day I can hand it to him/her and smile while watching them learn the little things that make them so dear to us. I recently moved states away from home with my husband to is Active Duty Army and returned from Iraq not long ago and sadly will be deploying again before our baby is 5 months old (fingers crossed that he won’t go) but I want him to be able to see the changes his baby went through even though he wasn’t able to see them himself…especially because he couldn’t. Being able to get an amazing baby book to throw myself into it to pass time while my husband is gone and my family is miles away would be a blessing on top of the Blessing thats on the way…
